Xit'olacw Community School

lil'wat nationThe Xit'olacw School is located on IR # 6 in Xit'olacw Village. Currently the enrollment is 244 students from Nursery School to Grade 12, and includes a Language Immersion program. There are a total of 42 staff members who have developed a mission statement which reads:

"Learning from our past and present to create pride and strength for our future".

The school follows B.C. curriculum with an integration of First Nation Curriculum. The staff develops materials to integrate Lil'wat curriculum, and courses of 1-2 week in duration are offered to cover cultural programs and courses. Ucwalmicwts language is taught to all Grades. There are also a number of events to include culture, celebrations and ceremonies throughout the school year.

The school has developed an educational system for the children whereby they learn and gain competence in the "Lil'wat Way", so that upon this foundation they will be able to build the academic and innovative skills necessary for their future (2007-2008 Annual Report). The Mount Currie Board of Education oversees the school operations.
